“Life Lessons learnt whilst Pottering”

Life Lessons that just occur

Definition Of Pottering: Doing a number of small tasks or not concentrating on anything particular or move or go in a casual, unhurried way.

My word today is Pottering. It’s OK to potter around and start things, and move onto something else, doing whatever takes your fancy. There is no rule book that we need to follow. It is Sunday after all, follow your pottering heart, stop and take some time for you, stop and cuddle your kids, stop and smile you have accomplished so much all ready.

Whilst I was pottering I took a moment to write about seven things I have learnt this week, it is true that you learn something new everyday.

My Life Lessons this week

Monday: Forgot to call a close friend for their Birthday. It was 11pm when I remembered, thought against calling so late but called them any way. They were delighted to hear from me on their special day.

Lesson Learnt: Call your Friends on their Birthday it makes them feel appreciated and special.

Tuesday: Was walking to my car, loaded with groceries, in between appointments. Start to pack the car, to hear a woman tooting her horn getting me to rush as she wanted my space (there were other spaces available). I smile and rush to get into the car and as I put my seat belt on she toots again. I stop, why am I rushing for this woman? Yes she may be having a bad day, but she has no idea of what kind of day I’m having. Please don’t keep tooting your horn, I know you are there.

Lesson Learnt: Don’t let others rush you through life. I didn’t. I decided to eat my lunch in the car.

Wednesday: Revisiting a client, decided to take her a bunch of flowers

Lesson Learnt: Flowers do make a Mummy’s day.

Thursday: Had a day in the office to play catch up, the catch up on my own was hard, called a friend who I knew was free and asked whether she could give me a hand.

Lesson Learnt: It’s OK to delegate and to ask for help if it’s all too much.

Friday: Was looking forward to the weekend after a hectic week, was not looking forward to Miss 15’s late evening hockey match an hour away on a very cold night. Love watching her play hockey just didn’t want to drive and stand around freezing. Then got an email; hockey match cancelled other team forfeited.

Lesson Learnt: The world works in mysterious ways and serendipity does exist.

Saturday: Absolute bag of frazzled nerves with massive butterflies in my stomach for the State National Taekwondo competitions. No, I wasn’t competing my Miss 15 was. I love her passion for sports and her dedication. At the weigh in we were told, no one in her weight or belt division to compete against, would she be happy to compete with someone who has more experience and a higher belt. My head was saying  “No No No” . Miss 15 said “Yes I’ll do It”

Lesson Learnt: Support you children’s dream, have trust and faith in them, let them make choices and be there for them.

Sunday : Yes I woke up grumpy, no idea why, took hold of my grumpiness and told it to leave. It has. Cuddled Mr 6 and am amazed at how happy he is all the time. Decided I should do house stuff, work stuff, me stuff, started pottering from one thing to the next. Nothing has really be done.

Lesson Learnt: It’s OK to potter and throw out the gulit. It is Sunday after all.

  1. This week I learned : it’s ok not to finish certain tasks and have an impromptu meet up with a friend. Did that TWICE this week. Once on a Wednesday when I was supposed to be home writing a blog but felt like catching up with a friend of mine and second time was on Friday whilst I was in the middle of writing a post and a friend text to ask if I’d like to meet for lunch because she was feeling down. Glad to know that she knew I would be able to make her feel better. I had a great time in both cases too! 🙂

  2. I love that you say it is ok to potter! I have also had “grumpy” days and decided that it takes way too much energy to sustain being grumpy and found that giving one of my children a cuddle ALWAYS helps. I have learnt too, that I love reading your word for the day – such a simple exercise that has really changed my perspectives some days. Thanks!

  3. The biggest lesson I learned this week was stop putting so much pressure on myself, things will get done in their own time and some days I need to take a step back and just breathe.
I now have a clear head going into this week, starting with a long awaited specialist appointment for my son tomorrow.

    Thanks for sharing your lessons!

  4. What a lovely insightful piece. Laughed out aloud at you eating lunch in your car. Two beeps – never had that happen before, how rude!
